Frequently Asked Questions

None! It is helpful to be a good swimmer, but many of our athletes have never played water polo before. It is important to be in good shape and be willing to come to practice ready to work hard and learn. Water polo is a demanding sport but also a great deal of fun!

Yes! We are happy to have both boys and girls. They practice together but have separate games and tournaments. We are still growing interest for the game in both genders, though tend to be short on girls.

This is the first item's accordion body. It is hidden by default, until the collapse plugin adds the appropriate classes that we use to style each element. These classes control the overall appearance, as well as the showing and hiding via CSS transitions. You can modify any of this with custom CSS or overriding our default variables. It's also worth noting that just about any HTML can go within the .accordion-body, though the transition does limit overflow.

SWP typically has matches primarily against other Ohio teams, but will also have a couple against Michigan teams through the season for additional play time. Some schools we compete against are local, such as St. Francis and Napoleon, but we also travel to play against schools in the Columbus and Cincinnati area. SWP also competes in the Ohio Cup tournament located in Columbus, as well as the State JV and Varsity tournaments. The location of States changes every year.

No! While most male athletes prefer a Speedo style suit, due to having less material for an opponent to grasp, either a Speedo style or jammer style is acceptable. Swim trunks cannot be worn, as the suit must fit snuggly and not have free flowing material.

A snug fit suit and a towel are the only required equipment. Optional equipment an athlete may want to purchase could include: a swim bag, a ball to practice at home with, a swim parka (to stay warm when out of pool), a swim cap, kick board and goggles (for warm up laps ONLY).

Goggles can result in damage to the eye or socket if hit with a ball, and therefore they are not permitted to be worn during a polo match.

Officials will check the finger and toe nails of all athletes prior to a match. If there is any nail felt beyond the mail bed, athletes are required to trim them back before they can participate in the match. This is for safety reasons, to protect athletes from being scratched by their opponent during a game.
